Vestige of a Trace
Performance, 44 minutes
California Institute of the Arts/ Night Gallery, 2022

Listen for traffic, Stay the course, Nothing moves here, One (three) slowly crawl, Indicate to trace, Vestige of a trace

Vestige of a Trace identifies a nameless, mundane and languid routine of perpetually moving through space on vast expanses of concrete. Situated in two parking lots on two different evenings, three dancers negotiate their own muscle memories and consider the information they collect as processes of tracing.

Gridlocking and spanning patterns, created by the dancers’ rigorous work, speculate the way their movement is shaped and changed by the locations. Inching in waves across the sprawl of asphalt, Vestige of a Trace explores how sculpted space disperse, split, align and intersect the body. The dancers work to reveal that this landscape is in fact a chosen, constructed, carved and directed system of participation.
